Wright "doesn't care" about MVG

World Champ dismisses mind games

PETER WRIGHT has joked that he “doesn’t care” what Michael van Gerwen thinks of him after snatching the Summer Series title.

The World Champion beat Gerwyn Price 8-2 in the final on Sunday evening to end the five-day ProTour as the top earner in Milton Keynes.

But Snakebite, 50, quickly dismissed any early mind games from World No.1 MVG who earlier had said that he didn’t consider the Scotsman his main rival.

He said: “It could have been two wins in Milton Keynes but obviously when you play Michael he comes back like a train. It was good to play him on the first day, the World No.1 and No.2.

“I didn’t hear that what he said about me and I don’t care. He’ll have to play me in the final, it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t like me or not!”

Wright also feels that he’ll be fresher for the Matchplay after a comfortable win over Price at the Marshall Arena - and even marked a game in the early afternoon!

He also admitted that he wasn’t overly happy with his final display, adding: “I was really nervous. Normally I’m quite focused but I ended up really nervous.

“Marking the game was the most nerve-wracking thing. I just didn’t want to make obviously.

“I’ve now got a few days to experiment with darts and see what that brings.

“It’s good to be back being in the bubble and everyone is happy to be playing darts again.

“This has been ideal preparation because normally we’d be coming back from the World Series straight to Blackpool and be totally shattered with jet lag. So I should be perfect for it.

“I brought about 30-odd sets of darts with me for this week. I still haven’t got a clue what to use for the Matchplay.”

Wright has drawn Jose De Sousa in the first round of the Matchplay which starts on Saturday while Van Gerwen takes on Brendan Dolan.
