LUKE ADMITS "GREATEST GAME"

Humphries lands first major in style

LUKE HUMPHRIES admitted it was the “greatest game” of his career to win the World Grand Prix.

The Slough slinger produced a sensational 138 finish to beat Gerwyn Price 5-2 in the final in Leicester on Sunday night.

‘Cool Hand’ Luke, 28, came from one set down to smash the Iceman and land the £120,000 top prize and move up to World No.4.

He said: “I’ve imagined this moment in my whole career. I’m not going to cry but it’s emotional.

“You can imagine these moments and it never feels as good as it actually is.

“That 138 is probably one of the best shots of my career let alone for the title.

“If I didn’t hit that we go to the break and Gezzy feels like he’s back in the game. I couldn’t have picked a better ending for my first major.

“I think a lot of people wrote me off tonight and that Gezzy would steamroller me. But I’ve got a bit of bottle about me. I’ve got the ability to play well.

“Regardless of anything I’ve done in my career that was the greatest game I’ve ever played in my life.

“I said we will see what Luke Humphries is made of. Whether I’ve got it or I ain’t. I think I’ve proved now to myself that I have got it.

“This is a first in a lot I think. We are in an era when there’s so many great dart players. These won’t be coming around every weekend. I’ve worked extremely hard the last few years.”

Price looked in fine form taking the opening set with ease. But Hump came roaring back to take the next three. Price finally stopped the rot but the Englishman kept his cool to get over the line for his first major title with a 57, 57, 24 finish in style.
