SMITH IS "BIGGER TARGET"

World Champ goes for Matchplay glory

MICHAEL SMITH knows he has a “bigger target” on his back going into the Betfred World Matchplay.

The World Champion faces Steve Beaton tomorrow night (Sunday) as he bids for a first title at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

Smith, 32, revealed he wants to deliver a triple crown of trophies after winning the Grand Slam and Worlds

He said: “I know I've got a bigger target on my back now being World No.1 as well but as long as I do my job, I should be fine.

“I've won the Grand Slam and the World's now I want my triple crown. The Matchplay is my third favourite event.

“It’s an iconic venue. The crowd are right on top of you. It’s special for us as players.

“I’m feeling confident. I’m feeling good. I’ve had a few disappointments in this tournament, especially losing the final to Rob Cross.

“This year feels different though. I’m going in as the World No.1, and I’ve got to prove why I’m in that position.

“I’m feeling comfortable and I’ve got to continue that winning run this year, hopefully starting with the World Matchplay.”

Smith also believes his more relaxed approach can help him when it comes to the pressure games.

He continued: “I'm still a hot head as well but I can keep that calm, keep that under wraps now. I wasn't the nicest of people.

“But I'm a bit older, a bit wiser now. If you play well, you play well. If you lose, no one died so that's my attitude now.”

Smith has been regularly suffering with his eyes in recent months and revealed he is considering laser treatment.

He recently visited an eye specialist and he didn't have such good news, adding: “Had a telling off though as had my dailies in for over three months. Think laser eye surgery next year for me.”

Schedule of Play 7pm.

First Round: Joe Cullen v Mike De Decker, Rob Cross v Daryl Gurney, Gerwyn Price v Stephen Bunting, Dave Chisnall v Gary Anderson.
